Chicano Batman
Los Angeles band Chicano Batman has been an ever-evolving music group since their formation in 2008 ranging in styles of psychedelic soul, funk, indie, prog, and rock. The band consists of Eduardo Arenas (bassist, guitarist, vocalist), Carlos Arevalo (guitarist, keyboardist), Bardo Martinez (lead vocalist, keyboardist, guitarist), and Gabriel Villa (drummer).
The band members bonded over 1960s Brazilian artists Caelano Veloso and Tropicalia music. With four albums - one of which that was released in 2020 titled Invisible People - and seven singles under their belt, Chicano Batman has gained a loyal fanbase with their unique multi-genre fused style. It’s no wonder that Chicano Batman has such a raving and loyal fanbase with major hits such as Black Lipstick, Itotiani, and Cycles of Existential Rhyme. They continue to create catchy and funky tunes, focusing more towards funk-soul in their more recent releases.
Now, if you have never heard of Chicano Batman, you may be wondering what the origin of that name came from. Quoted from the Seattle Times, “‘The name Chicano is an identity in the Southwest and it just means an acknowledgment of one’s Mexican-Americaness,” says guitarist Carlos Arévalo. All four members of the band have roots south of the border. Arévalo’s mother is third-generation Mexican American and his father is from El Salvador. Their musical influences include bands that many who grew up with Latino parents may recognize, from the ’60s Chilean band Los Angeles Negros to the Peruvian band Los Pasteles Verdes.”
Luckily for us, Chicano Batman is still in motion, spreading their amazing tunes across the United States. Click here to view their tour dates!
